“Rehabilitation coordination is strongly dependant on the communication between the patient, the surgeon and the therapist...”
Cassandra Harkness is a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist working in the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit within the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Her main line of specialty is the rehabilitation of elective and traumatic hand injuries and the breast reconstructive patient, although all areas of plastic surgery are rehabilitated.
Rehabilitation coordination is strongly dependant on the communication between the patient, the surgeon and the therapist. The best outcomes are achieved when there is a clear understanding of the patient’s needs and therapy is compassionate and holistic.
Miss Harkness is a member of the British Association of Hand Therapists (BAHT), Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and is State Registered. She qualified in Glasgow with a BSc degree in 1985.
Professional activities include lecturing on the undergraduate Prosthetic and Orthotic course at Strathclyde University, acting as an External Course Assessor for BAHT Accredited Courses nationally, involvement with the plastic surgery team teaching with registrars and a regular teaching commitment with physiotherapy staff working within the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit. She is a Clinical Educator affiliated to the Caledonian University, teaching undergraduate and MSc students.
She has been involved in the organisation and setting up of the rehabilitation support in Korle Bu Plastics and Burns Unit in Ghana with Resurge Africa, a charity affiliated to the Canniesburn Unit.
Her clinical practice is kept updated by attending BAHT Conferences and The European Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy Conferences and other specialist meetings including regular meetings with the Scottish Society of Hand Therapists and the West of Scotland Therapists.
Clinical Governance and audit feature regularly within her NHS working environment and she is responsible for appraising members of staff forming CPD plans for individuals.
